On the remote island of Chiloé in the late 19th century, an Indigenous girl named Rosa lives and works with her father on a farm. When the foreman brutally turns on Rosa’s father, she sets out for justice, seeking help from the king of a powerful organization of sorcerers.
When I made "Sorcery", I wanted to reclaim a silenced chapter of Chile’s colonial history. Inspired by real events on the island of Chiloé in the late 19th century, the film follows a young Indigenous girl who seeks justice after her father’s murder. Rather than telling a conventional revenge story, I was drawn to the tension between Western law and Indigenous spiritual knowledge. The landscape—wild, wind‑swept, and mysterious—became a living presence, reflecting both oppression and resistance. I worked with non‑professional actors and Mapuche cultural references to ground the story in authenticity. **The film ultimately suggests** that justice can take many forms, and that reclaiming ancestral knowledge is itself an act of defiance against colonial power.
