2019 marks the centenary of legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham. This poetic film traces Merce’s artistic evolution over three decades of risk and discovery (1944–1972), from his early years as a struggling dancer in postwar New York to his emergence as one of the most visionary and influential choreographers worldwide. The 3D technology weaves together Merce’s philosophies and stories, creating a visceral journey into the choreographer’s world.
When I began "Cunningham", I wanted to approach Merce Cunningham’s work not through traditional biography, but through movement itself. Rather than explaining his choreography, I sought to immerse the audience inside it—using 3D technology, archival material, and embodied performance to make space and motion tangible. The film traces his artistic evolution while honoring the radical independence that defined his collaborations with John Cage and other innovators. **The film ultimately conveys** that dance is not decoration but philosophy in motion—an exploration of chance, structure, and freedom. Through cinema, I hoped to let viewers experience choreography as a living, breathing architecture of time and space.
