Monólogo Colectivo
directed by Jessica Sarah Rinland
Argentina | 2024 | 104min
Intimate and fragmented moments unfold in a community of zoos and animal rescue centers across Argentina. As the histories of these institutions are uncovered, dedicated workers commit both day and night to caring for the remaining enclosed animals, fostering a mutual bond that transcends the imagined boundaries between human and animal.
In making "Collective monologue", I was interested in the fragile boundary between humans and animals, and in the quiet labor of those who care for non-human lives. By observing conservationists, veterinarians, and zookeepers at work, I chose a patient, attentive gaze that mirrors their own gestures of care. Rather than imposing narration, I allowed images and sounds to speak collectively, forming a chorus of interspecies encounters. The film ultimately proposes that listening—truly listening—is an ethical act. It invites viewers to reconsider hierarchies between species and to recognize responsibility as a shared, ongoing dialogue between living beings.
