Sophie Dupuis

Sophie Dupuis

Origin: Quebec

Sophie Dupuis (b. Val-d’Or, Quebec) is a Canadian director and screenwriter celebrated for her visceral, emotionally uncompromising storytelling that delves into identity, masculinity, and marginalized communities. After studying at Concordia University and Université du Québec à Montréal, she debuted with Family First (2018), a tense familial crime drama that became Canada’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars and earned her a Best Director nod at the Prix Iris . Her sophomore feature Underground (2020)—a claustrophobic miner’s tale—premiered at Whistler, where she won Best Director in the Borsos Competition . Solo (2023), a fierce drag-scene romance exploring self-identity and family, premiered at TIFF and claimed the Best Canadian Film Award . Dupuis’s work is marked by empathetic realism, formal sharpness, and a bold, socially attuned voice.
