Kirill Serebrennikov

Kirill Serebrennikov

Origin: Russia

Kirill Serebrennikov (b. 1969) is a Russian film and theater director from Rostov-on-Don, noted for provocative, stylistically bold work. He broke out internationally with The Student (2016), followed by Leto (2018), Petrov’s Flu (2021), and Tchaikovsky’s Wife (2022). Leto competed at Cannes and won the Cannes Soundtrack Award. Petrov’s Flu premiered In Competition at Cannes 2021, winning the Vulcan Award for cinematography. Tchaikovsky’s Wife competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2022, affirming his standing among Europe’s leading auteurs. Formerly artistic head of Moscow’s Gogol Center, he also directs opera across Europe. His work fuses stylized imagery, restless energy, and emotional intensity to probe identity, love, and memory, balancing satire, romance, politics, and deeply human longing today.
