Etienne Kallos

Etienne Kallos

Origin: South Africa

Etienne Kallos (b. 1972, South Africa) is a Greek-South African filmmaker whose work explores displacement, identity, and “unbelonging.” He studied theatre in South Africa and completed graduate film studies at NYU. His thesis short Firstborn (Eersgeborene) (2009) was the first Afrikaans-language film to win the Corto Cortissimo Lion at Venice. His feature debut The Harvesters (2018, Un Certain Regard at Cannes) probes coming-of-age among young men in Afrikaans farming communities. He is currently a PhD candidate at Leiden University, researching diasporic experience, rites of passage, and how new cinematic forms can express intergenerational dislocation.
