Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Apichatpong Weerasethakul

Origin: Thailand

Apichatpong Weerasethakul (b. 1970) is a Thai director and visual artist renowned for his meditative, dreamlike cinema that blurs reality, memory, and folklore. Trained in architecture and cinema, he debuted with Blissfully Yours (2002, Cannes Un Certain Regard) and followed with Tropical Malady (2004, Cannes Jury Prize). His Palme d'Or–winning Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) fused reincarnation and rural myth. Cemetery of Splendour (2015, Cannes) probed collective sleep and spiritual resonance, and Memoria (2021, Cannes) deepened his exploration of sonic memory across continents . More recently, he’s shifted into immersive installations like A Conversation with the Sun (Afterimage) (2024), extending his poetic visual practice into sensory, temporal art . His work weaves mindfulness, myth, and sensory depth in a uniquely contemplative cinema.
