No Nos Representan
directed by Irene Muñoz
Switzerland | 2019 | 40min
How to emancipate from the reproduction of famous paintings and significant political events, to engage a genuine process of creation and claim? This documentary essay written in the first person questions the use of art during conflicts and the diversion of the cultural symbols as a vehicle of ideologies.
With "They Don't Represent Us", I set out to capture a moment of political awakening from within rather than from a distance. The film engages with grassroots activism and the feeling of disillusionment that many young people experience toward institutional politics. Instead of offering a traditional explanatory documentary, I chose an immersive approach that privileges proximity, emotion, and collective energy. The camera becomes part of the movement—close to faces, chants, assemblies—allowing the viewer to sense both the hope and the contradictions embedded in the struggle. I was interested in how political identity forms not only through ideology but through shared presence and lived experience. **Ultimately, the film suggests** that representation is not simply about being spoken for—it is about reclaiming voice, space, and agency in a system that often feels distant or unresponsive.
