La vaca que cantó una canción hacia el futuro
directed by Francisca Alegría
Chile | 2022 | 98min
When thousands of fish die in a polluted river in southern Chile, Magdalena, a woman long-deceased, emerges amongst their lifeless bodies. Magdalena encounters her widowed husband, sending him into a state of shock and prompting the return of their daughter, Cecilia. Magdalena’s presence and her effect on the environment stirs curiosity and fear among her family. As the past comes into focus, mother and daughter are met with the opportunity to change the future.
When I made "The Cow Who Sang a Song into the Future" I wanted to weave together ecological grief and family memory. Set in southern Chile, where environmental collapse disrupts both nature and daily life, the film follows a family forced to confront unresolved tensions when a mysterious woman emerges from the river. I was drawn to magical realism as a way to express how trauma—both personal and environmental—resurfaces unexpectedly. Water becomes a carrier of memory, linking generations and wounds. **The film ultimately suggests** that healing requires listening to what has been silenced—whether in the land, in animals, or within our own families—and recognizing that the future depends on reconciliation with the past.
