Origin: Romania
Sebastian Mihăilescu (b. 1991, Romania) is a Romanian writer-director and cinematographer whose work blends documentary immediacy with intimate fiction. Emerging from the contemporary Romanian independent scene, he gained attention with You Are Ceaușescu to Me (2021), a playful yet politically resonant hybrid portrait of post-communist memory. His debut feature Mammalia (2023) premiered in the Encounters section of the Berlinale, exploring masculinity, vulnerability, and alternative communities through a fluid, genre-defying approach. Mihăilescu’s cinema combines autobiographical elements, performative strategies, and a sensitive exploration of identity, crafting bold, unconventional narratives that challenge social norms and cinematic form.
