Rúnar Rúnarsson

Rúnar Rúnarsson

Origin: Iceland

Rúnar Rúnarsson (b. 1977, Reykjavík, Iceland) is an Icelandic writer-director renowned for emotionally restrained, visually poetic films that explore grief, youth, and moral awakening. A graduate of the Danish National Film School, he first gained international attention with his Oscar-nominated short The Last Farm (2004). His features Volcano (2011), Sparrows (2015, San Sebastián Golden Shell), and Echo (2019) examine fragile human connections within stark Nordic landscapes. With precise framing and understated performances, Rúnarsson crafts intimate narratives shaped by silence, vulnerability, and moments of quiet revelation, establishing himself as one of contemporary Nordic cinema’s most distinctive voices.
