Melina León

Melina León

Origin: Peru

Melina León (b. 1975, Lima, Peru) is a Peruvian writer-director and producer whose work bridges intimate storytelling and social history. After studying film at Columbia University, she gained international recognition with her debut feature Song Without a Name (2019), which premiered at Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight. Inspired by true events, the film examines the theft of newborn babies in 1980s Peru through striking black-and-white cinematography and restrained narrative tension. León’s cinema combines formal elegance with political consciousness, focusing on marginalized voices and systemic injustice. Her work reflects a deep engagement with memory, identity, and Peru’s unresolved historical wounds.
