Lisandro Alonso

Lisandro Alonso (b. 1975, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is an Argentine filmmaker associated with the New Argentine Cinema, known for his austere, contemplative storytelling and striking use of landscape. He gained international recognition with La libertad (2001), followed by Los muertos (2004) and Liverpool (2008), minimalist works centered on solitary figures and existential drift. Later films such as Jauja (2014), starring Viggo Mortensen, expand his visual and narrative scope while maintaining his meditative approach. Alonso’s cinema is defined by long takes, sparse dialogue, and an intense attention to physical space, crafting immersive reflections on isolation, time, and human presence.
