Ciro Guerra

Ciro Guerra

Origin: Colombia

Ciro Guerra (b. Feb 6, 1981, Río de Oro, Colombia) is a Colombian director and screenwriter acclaimed for visually lush, politically resonant narratives rooted in magical realism and indigenous storytelling. He debuted with The Wandering Shadows (2004) and followed with The Wind Journeys (2009, Cannes Un Certain Regard), both submitted for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar consideration . His breakthrough, Embrace of the Serpent (2015), was Colombia’s first Oscar-nominated film and earned top honors at Cannes and Sundance . Birds of Passage (2018), co-directed with Cristina Gallego, reimagined Wayuu culture as a drug-gangster saga . He went international with Waiting for the Barbarians (2019), and executive-produced Netflix’s Green Frontier the same year . Guerra’s cinema blends poetic geography, mythic narrative, and sociopolitical melancholy with sculptural visual rigor.
