Bent Hamer

Bent Hamer (b. December 18, 1956, Sandefjord, Norway) is a Norwegian director, writer, and producer celebrated for his gently comic, character-driven films that observe everyday life with warmth, absurdity, and melancholic humour. After studying film theory and literature in Stockholm, his breakout feature Eggs (1995) established his quiet, humane voice. He followed with Kitchen Stories (2003), O’Horten (2008), and 1001 Grams (2014), all distinguished by precise pacing, understated visual style, and empathy for small manners and odd lives. His most recent feature, The Middle Man (2021), turns his attention to farce, loss, and the absurdity of routine. Hamer’s cinema thrives on small moments, eccentric souls, and modest but deeply felt truths.
