Amat Escalante

Amat Escalante (b. 1979) is a Mexican director, screenwriter, and producer acclaimed for his stark realism and unflinching depictions of violence and social inequality. Trained in Spain and Cuba, he debuted with Sangre (2005, Cannes). Los Bastardos (2008) deepened his exploration of migration and brutality. With Heli (2013), he won Best Director at Cannes, praised for raw intensity and visual rigor. The Untamed (2016, Venice Silver Lion) merged melodrama and science fiction to probe desire and repression. Escalante also directed episodes of Narcos: México and returned with Lost in the Night (2023). His cinema fuses formal precision, social critique, and unsettling imagery.
