Agustí Villaronga

Agustí Villaronga

Origin: Spain

Agustí Villaronga (1953–2023) was a Spanish auteur celebrated for his fearless, deeply haunting cinema that delved into childhood trauma, memory, and historical violence. Trained in Art History at the University of Barcelona, he debuted with In a Glass Cage (1986), an unsettling meditation on abuse and suffering. Moon Child (1989, Cannes) and The Sea (2000, Berlin Manfred Salzgeber Award) affirmed his poetic realism and psychological depth. With Black Bread (2010), he earned Goya and Gaudí prizes for its evocative portrayal of post–Civil War Catalonia. He continued with The King of Havana (2015), Uncertain Glory (2017), and The Belly of the Sea (2021), and ended with Stormy Lola (2023), a raw, unexpectedly comedic swan song filmed amid illness.
